Along the Way by ZACHARY JAMES SMITH MUSIC is a guitar anthem that conveys energy and excitement without any lyrics. Simply with coherent instrumentation, they have created a narrative that transcends words, making it more personal and universal at the same time. The guitar ebbs and flows, exploring the depths and peaks of the piece’s melodic landscape. The guitar isn’t afraid to dive into the song’s complex musical tapestry. Although it leads from the front, there are moments where it allows other musical aspects to shine, such as the drums.

It steps back and allows them to be the star of the show. This helps the composition in several ways. It shows the chemistry between the different musical elements. Each instrument gives the other space to perform while supporting one another with complimentary backing arrangements, showing how much they all trust one another. This confidence within the track is infectious and heightens the way the listener feels about the song. The other reason why this ebb and flow is important to the track is the sense of variety it creates. Each musical element feels as if it has personality, and how they interact is the cornerstone of the nonverbal narrative at the heart of the song thematically. The guitar performance is energetic and full of forward movement. It soars effortlessly through the melody with quick runs and adventurous trills. The high points of the lead are emphasised further by the crunchy depths of the rhythm guitar behind it. This provides a melodic foundation for the lead to deviate from and also a textural contrast, juxtaposing the crisp lead guitar with its beautiful fuzz and distortion.

Overall, this track impressed me through its commitment to its hopeful themes. I love how it allowed each instrument a moment to shine. The track is at its best when these elements react with one another. Hearing these melodic personalities bounce off each other is a treat to listen to that I recommend checking out for yourself!
