Lowdown Stray Dog Blues feels like the moment when the album opens up. It creates a narrative of a man down on his luck. The depth of the storytelling mixed with the traditional bluegrass instrumentation paints a vivid and cohesive picture. The use of the count at the start of the track grounds the listener in FORREST’s vocals. It establishes them as the guiding light to the narrative and composition before the track gets started. The album was recorded very naturally, allowing the songs to speak for themselves without heavy production interrupting their story. This count feels like a moment in defining that raw, and candid sound that the audience falls in love with throughout the album. Autumn Child changes the vibe of the album significantly with a more melancholy performance than the previous songs. Some of the plucking on this track connects so well to the concept of feeling twisted and confused between lust and love. This melancholic tone rounds out the middle of the album until D Minor Tune. This track picks up the pace significantly with excellent use of the bass to contribute to the rhythm and melody. There is a connection between the instruments in this track in particular that highlights the chemistry between the different artists. Forrest described the making of this album as a video game, something that took focus and effort but was deeply rewarding to complete. As a listener, one gets a sense of this hard-working and deeply dedicated team that came together to make Daydreaming Music Fiend work so well.
