Night Light Review

Night Light by Matya is an uplifting and fun indie pop anthem in the vein of Sabrina Carpenter or Clairo. The track has an infectious confidence that transcends every part, from the delivery to the melodic tapestry to the music video. The bass guitar was the first aspect that stood out to me. It has a real sense of bounce that supports the melody and rhythm simultaneously.

By jumping between octaves, the bass picks up energy as it dances around the melody. It makes the listener want to nod their head while also providing tonal contrast to the lightness of the rest of the track. It is deep and groovy, exploring the lower tones within the track’s melodic DNA. The vocals feel entirely separate from the tone of the bass. High register and shiny timbre, the vocals have an ethereal tone that floats above the rest of the song. There is a clear sense that the vocals are the star of the show. It feels as if the rest of the track is there to support the sound and narrative delivered by the vocals. Matching the tone of the track, the vocals are confident, bold, and unapologetically beautiful, conveying the fun and light essence of the song through their delivery. The lyrics are enigmatic and playful, feeling more poetic than descriptive. I like this more ambiguous style of writing, it lends itself to personal interpretation which is what makes music so fun. The video is also excellent. I know we’re music reviewers first and foremost here but it stood out because of its cohesion to the song. The sense of contrast between the depth of the bass and the levity of the voice felt reflected in the use of blue and yellow. In the music video, the two colours bounce around, interacting with one another. Each colour emphasises the strengths of the other with its contrast. I feel much the same way with the different melodic aspects of Night Light. This track is playful and fun to listen to but also clearly meticulously crafted.Check out the song and video below!
